| Ian Allsop - Young Fish Frier of the Year |
Hagley fish and chip shop Our Plaice has once again received recognition at the highest levels, winning a coveted award at the national Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition. Skilled employee Ian Allsop, aged 20, was named Young Fish Frier of the Year at the recent awards ceremony in London, and was presented with his gong by Ainsley Harriott.
This is not the first time Our Plaice has achieved national success - it was crowned UK Fish & Chip Shop of the Year in early 2005, and has since been featured on Ready Steady Cook, GMTV, and Mind Your Own Business. Our Plaice's owners Gregg and Caroline Howard first opened the shop in 2003, aiming to providing an upmarket feel whilst retaining the traditional aspects of the industry.
Ian said: "I am absolutely over the moon to win this award - it's like a dream come true. I'd like to say a huge thank you to Gregg and Caroline who have encouraged me and taught me the skills involved in running a successful fish and chip shop. The fish and chips industry can provide many exciting opportunities, and I hope I inspire others to consider it as a career."
The Young Fish Frier of the Year category is run by Drywite Ltd, which specialises in fish frying products for the catering industry. Sales director Brian Wilkinson said: "We saw a very high calibre of entrants to this year's competition and it was a tough decision. Ian really impressed us with his knowledge, passion and commitment to build Our Plaice as a successful business. I think he really is one to watch for the future."
The Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition, now in its 20th year, is run by industry body Seafish and recognises the high standards of the UK's favourite take-away.
